Allerton Road, All Hallows

Built 1872-76 by John Bibby as a memorial to his wife, Fanny, whose 60th birthday was All Hallows Eve 1872. The architect was Enoch Grayson.

Nave with aisles under lean-to roofs, transepts chancel with vestry to north. Four bay nave has three clerestory windows. Windows by William Morris, designed by Edward Burne-Jones. The windows demonstrate Burne-Jones' development as a stained glass designer and constitutes one of the most complete sets to be found. South transept windows of four holy men with north transept windows of four holy women. The cartoons were re-used in the Jesus College Chapel, Cambridge.

The east window: 'The Adoration of the Lamb' is based on a painting by Van Eyck; this window Burne-Jones believed to be his finest. The west window is of the four evangelists. The church also displays some good recent tapestries.
