Beetham, St Michael and All Angels

The church of St Michael and All Angels is the most prominent feature of Beetham, a village which lies on a short westward loop of the A6 some six miles north of Carnforth. The church is a grade I listed building dating back at least to early Norman times. The base of the church tower is of Saxon origin and Norman masonry can be found on the south side. Tradition has it that in Saxon times the church was dedicated to St Lioba. There is a window in the northwest aisle commemorating her along with St Osyth and St Ethelburga.

The church is rectangular in plan (no transepts) with the tower at the western end. There are scarcely any features, which are symmetrical. The arch leading into the tower is early Norman; the semi-circular arches of the south side are from the late Norman period whilst the ones on the north side are from the Decorated period. The supporting pillars are not opposite each other and have irregular capitals.

Beetham village still closely resembles its aspect of a century and a half ago and there is much of interest in the surrounding rural area.
