Blaxhall, St Peter
A 13th century church standing on its own a mile from the main part of the village. The tower is flint but the top has been rebuilt with brick after it collapsed probably in the 17th century. The nave and chancel are both rendered.
Inside, the nave has an early 16th century hammer beam and arch braced roof. The font is 15th century and unusual having a traceried shaft with the Evangelist's emblems at the corners. The open layout of the interior is due to restoration work carried out in 1863 when the rood screen and pews were removed.
Of particular interest are the various works by members of the local Rope family in the Arts and Crafts style. The east window is the work of Margaret Agnes Rope in memory of George Rope and other members of the family. In the porch is a small window of children possibly also by Margaret Agnes. The bronze War Memorial is by Ellen Mary Rope as is a small plaque in a window embrasure. The bas-relief in plaster in memory of Marjorie Wilson is by Ellen Mary's niece Dorothy. Note the two memorials either side of the tower arch to two long serving churchwardens.
