Bournemouth, St Clement
St Clement's Church, 1873, is one of the finest churches in the Bournemouth area. It has been described as 'one of the five most significant late Victorian churches'. The architect was John D Sedding and the style he adopted is that of the 14th century. The most unique feature of the church is the high altar reredos. At the time of its erection, it was the largest work of its kind executed in this country since the Reformation. The large central panel is of caen stone and represents the Adoration of the Magi and Shepherds. The reredos is surrounded by statues of the apostles and national saints. Other special features of the church include the beautifully carved high pulpit.
St Clement's church stands in the middle of an area of considerable social deprivation. Until now the church has been closed for reasons of security and protection from vandalism. A grant from the Open Churches Trust will enable the beauty of the church to be appreciated by local residents and holiday makers to the Bournemouth area.
