Briercliffe, St James
The parish church of St James dates from the year 1840 and was designed by the architect Edmund Sharpe. It is a grade II listed building which has remained largely unaltered since it was originally opened.
The most obvious change to the church is the enlarged choir vestry and meeting room which was built in 1992. The vicarage, which stands on an adjoining site, dates from 1847.
The church building contains some attractive Victorian stained glass, both in the east window and also in memorial windows located in the chancel, whilst behind the altar is a fine oak reredos dating from 1897. There is a gallery, supported by cast iron pillars and containing the original box pews, to three sides of the church.
The walls carry the Stations of the Cross, which were donated by the Day School in 1985 to commemorate the school's 150th anniversary.
