Compton Martin, St Michael the Archangel
Pevsner describes this place of worship as 'perhaps the best Norman church in Somerset' - and it certainly still contains much Norman work.
The nave arcade, with the curious 'barley sugar' pillar and clerestory date from the early 12th century. The north aisle too is of this date and contains a 19th century window commemorating a local 12th century minor 'saint' - Wulfric who was born in the village.
The massive and plain font is Norman but the pulpit comes from the 19th century.
Splendid Norman vaulting can be seen in the chancel as can some interesting Jacobean work in choir stalls and organ screen.
The tower, at ground level, is approached from the nave via a lofty Tudor panelled arch which together with the tower itself dates from the early 16th century. It is some 70 feet high and contains six 18th century bells - all cast locally.
Thus the church, overlooking the pond, dominates the village and serves it faithfully as it has done for the last 850 years.
