Darwen, St Peter

The church overlooks the town centre with a clear view of the Victorian Darwen Tower.

The foundation stone was laid in 1827 and building work completed in two and a half years. Consecrated in 1829 as Holy Trinity, this grade II* listed church can accommodate up to 1000 people, having balconies on three sides. The font is dedicated to John Shorrock.

The stained glass windows at the east end depict the following Saints: Peter, Paul, Andrew, Patrick, David, Thomas and Matthew. The centre panel is in remembrance of John Chadwick and depicts the "Resurrection of the Lord" (1896). Other windows are dedicated to Briggs (1896), Duxbury (1931) and Beswick (1934).

There are plaques dedicated to Mary Gillibrand (1909), which mentions the electric lighting, Robert Gillibrand (1919), Captain Savatard (1915), plus a list of gifts and givers from 1934.

The alabaster reredos, a representation of da Vinci's The Last Supper, was dedicated in 1923. This and an alabaster tablet, dedicated in 1920, are both part of the War Memorial.

The organ is one of the finest examples in the area of a three manual instrument by Binns.

In 1974 Holy Trinity, St John's and St George's merged to form St Peter's.
