Erpingham, St Mary

Mostly 15th century. A fine, tall and elaborate west tower. Sir Thomas de Erpingham accompanied John of Gaunt during his campaigns in France and also Kings Henry IV and V and was at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. Shakespeare mentions him in Henry V.

The east window contains glass bought in Germany in 1804 from the cloisters of the monastery of Steinfeld. The font is from the bombed church of St Benedict, Norwich. The six bells came from St John de Sepulchre which has become redundant. The tenor bell was cast by Thomas Potter in 1408.

Unusually the church displays the Royal Arms of the reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.
