Fawley, All Saints

The first mention of a church on this site is in 971 AD, when the Bishop of Winchester held lands here. The present church was begun in 1170, and continued to be extended until around 1340. The building now consists of a Norman tower and chancel, with early English nave, aisles and side chapels. The Victorian pews and galleries have been removed during the course of the subsequent century and the church has been very sensitively re-ordered during recent years, still retaining its ancient character. The church is entered through a fine late Norman west doorway, beautifully decorated, and protected by a Victorian porch. By combining the character and atmosphere of the ancient church with the careful restoration of this century, the church is a fine gem, located, as it is, near the largest petrol refinery in Europe, and on the edge of Southampton Water.
