Handsworth, St Andrew
This grade I listed building, a work by the architect W H Bidlake (1862-1938), was consecrated in January 1909.
A lead-covered oak flêche rises to 80 feet and there is a bell-turret over the north transept. The spacious interior consists of a nave with side passage aisles and large north and south transepts.
An English high altar with riddel posts, candles and a dorsal is flanked by carved statues of saints. A nave altar was installed in the 1980s following changes to the liturgy.
The large east window, made by Geoffrey Webb, has the theme of Te Deum. The Good Shepherd Chapel has a window of the Good Shepherd. Small windows on either side of the nave are of apostles and evangelists.
The choir arch has a rood beam with figures and the War Memorial Chapel has an elaborately carved reredos designed by Bidlake. It has panels in spirit fresco depicting the Crucifixion and scenes from the Passion.
