Kilton, St Nicholas

The church of St Nicholas dates back to 1100; although dowsing has recently suggested there are earlier foundations, possibly from the early 9th century. Substantial rebuilding occurred in 1863 under the direction of John Norton, although many earlier features were retained; in particular the main arch and other parts of the chancel. The building occupies a raised site in the foothills of the Quantocks offering magnificent views over the Severn Estuary to Wales, the West Somerset coastline and the Quantocks purple rolling hills.

In 2004 St Nicholas was decommissioned as a parish church but continues as a place dedicated to the 'Greater Glory of God Through His People'. Although the primary use will be as a Drop-In Prayer and Day Time Retreat Centre, seasonal and social events are envisaged, plus exhibitions and performances reflecting artistic gifts of members of the public from all age groups.

The four bells have been reinstated with an Ellacombe Chiming Apparatus; having been rung out in 2006 for the first time in over fifty years. The bells ring the hours and the Angelus at noon. They date from the 14th/15th century, 1626, 1657 and 1745. Entry to the bell tower is by prior arrangement.

The simple but striking interior contains elements that predate the restoration, notably the 14th century font and the retained lancets. The unusual reredos, depicting five events from Christ's life, is a delight, adding a touch of colour to the east end. Each of the six arches is adorned with a biblical text written on a green banner-like background. The soft mellow colours of the interior add to a special sense of peace and stillness.

St Nicholas offers a very warm welcome to all visitors. Should the building be locked on arrival, entrance should be sought by the 'usual means'.
