Leck, St Peter

This pretty little church was built in 1914, although there had been a church or chapel of ease on the site since long before the dissolution of the monasteries in the early 16th century.

The church has a very Arts and Crafts feel to it, with simple carved pews and a carved, painted and gilded reredos. The east wall has two painted angels on either side of the large stained glass window. Fortunately most of the fine Victorian stained glass from the previous church was saved when it burnt down in 1913 and still graces the chancel, commemorating members of the Welsh family of Leck Hall.

The churchyard contains the 'Fever Graves' of three of the pupils from the Clergy Daughters School in Cowan Bridge, made famous by Charlotte Bronte who used her experiences there as a basis for her description of life at Lowood School in her novel Jane Eyre.

In spring the churchyard is carpeted with snowdrops, and from its elevated position there are extensive views of the Lune Valley and surrounding fells.
