Ashton on Ribble, St Michael & All Angels with St Mark Preston

The church of St Michael & All Angels is situated at the junction of Egerton and Tulketh Roads in the leafy suburb of Ashton on Ribble Preston. It was designed by Paley & Austin of Lancaster, one of the leading architects of the era, and consecrated on 2nd July 1908. It is a beautiful and impressive church and is recognised as being of special interest and historical importance. Although the west end of the nave was completed in 1915, the tower planned above the south transept has never been completed.

The marble reredos behind the high altar in the chancel was given in 1912 by Mrs Eliza Birley, one of the chief benefactors of the church, while the pulpit was donated in her memory the following year. The organ, built by Henry Ainscough of Preston, was dedicated in December 1934.

In the side chapel (originally the Lady Chapel, later referred to as the Memorial Chapel and now dedicated to St Mark), the oak screen was constructed in 1924 in remembrance of the 57 men of the parish who lost their lives in the 1914-18 War; other furnishings in the chapel, were given in memory of individuals killed in action. An oak reredos was added in 1953 to commemorate the 27 people from the parish who died in World War II. The War memorials from St Mark's church were installed in 1992 when the parishes were combined.

The windows are of interest, with some excellent examples of 1920's stained glass. The window in the chapel, depicting St Cecilia, was installed in memory of Miss Alice Livesey, for many years choirmistress and organist of St Michael's and a leading figure in Preston musical circles. The magnificent east window was designed by H J Stanmer of Bradwell Buckinghamshire. It depicts the Holy Trinity with the Hand of God above, Christ the King of Glory in the centre and a Dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit. It was installed on 30th June 1968.
