Thaxted, St John the Baptist with Our Lady and St Laurence

Thaxted Parish Church was built from 1340 to 1510 on the site of an earlier church. It is of cathedral-like proportions: 183 feet long and 87 feet wide, with a spire of 181 feet, which can be seen from whichever direction the visitor approaches Thaxted.

The first impression on entering the church is one of light. Most of the glass, of which there is a great deal, is clear. There is still some medieval stained glass. The balanced proportions of the church – nave, two side aisles, chancel, two side chapels, central crossing and transepts and two porches – make the building a jewel in the crown, described by John Betjeman as one of the finest in the country.

There is a strong tradition of music in the church. The choir sings Mass every Sunday. In addition, there is a music festival every summer, the successor to the music festival established when Gustav Holst lived in Thaxted in the early part of the 20th century.
